Steve Reilly has provided voters with clear stances on key issues by responding to the 2018 Political Courage Test.
Pro-choice | Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
I support the parameters set out in Roe v. Wade as to abortion. I support access to birth control under the Affordable Care Act. |
Yes | In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes | In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
We need a fair tax code that is progressive, requiring those in the top income tax brackets to pay more. We should increase the tax rate on some forms of passive income. The United States' defense spending currently is more than the next 7 nations combined on an annual basis. There are parts of the defense budget that can and should be reasonably reduced. |
Yes | Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
We must pass comprehensive campaign finance reform measures that rid our federal elections of the corrupt influence of "big money". A matching fund plan, like the "Fair Elections Now Act" would bring sanity to congressional fundraising, and make it easier for more of our citizens to be able to run for office. We have to eliminate the influence of 501(c)(4) corporations, and super PAC's, and reign in the impact of the Citizen's United decision in the Supreme Court. |
Yes | Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No | Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Federal spending can be used to improve and invest in our infrastructure, and provide additional employment in so doing. The tax code and limited subsidies can be used to promote certain key industries, such as those that are part of the "green economy", including electric batteries and renewable energy sources, so as to help those industries develop and compete in the global marketplace with those of nations who use similar means. |
Yes | Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yes | Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Please see my prior response. I support our nation's reentry into the Paris Climate Accord, implementation of the Obama-era Clean Power Plan, and retaining Obama-era fuel economy standards for automobiles. The U.S. must reclaim its international leadership role in fighting climate change and global warming. |
Yes | Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
I support sensible gun control, including an assault weapons ban, a ban on "bump stocks" and extended ammunition magazines, universal background checks on the purchase of all firearms, and passing a bill that creates incentives for states to enact "gun violence restraining orders". |
No | Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
The Affordable Care Act can be refined and adjusted to make it work better for all Americans. I support implementing a "public option" as part of the ACA to help drive down healthcare costs. I would support restoring the individual mandate and subsidies that President Trump has dismantled in his attempt to undermine the ACA. |
No | Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
No | Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
I support comprehensive, humane immigration reform that would protect the Dreamers, and create a reasonable path to citizenship for them and others who have been in our country for extended periods, have raised their families here, contributed to the economy, and otherwise obeyed the laws of our nation. I would also support as part of such an effort the bolstering of our border security, but without building the wall that Mr. Trump champions. |
Yes | Should the United States use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a nuclear weapon?
No | Do you support increased American intervention in Middle Eastern conflicts beyond air support?
On a situation specific basis, the United States should retain the option to use military force to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a nuclear weapon that can be used against the U.S. and/or it's allies. |
1. I support restoring middle class economic opportunity for Americans. This includes use of the tax code, trade policy, and subsidies of key industries to bolster American industry and job opportunities, especially in developing the "green economy" and use of renewable energy. 2. I support bolstering public education (k-12), and making public colleges and universities tuition free for all Americans. The approximate cost of this would be $47 billion annually, which can be funded by some minor adjustments to the tax code. 3. Making healthcare accessible and affordable for all Americans. |
